When we are looking for God, sometimes our prayers sound like David’s when He is looking for God and wonders if God is even listening (Psalm 13). We may often find ourselves asking the same questions David did.
“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?” - Psalm 13:1-2 (NIV)
When life is hard, do you ever look for God? Do you ever cry out to Him and wonder if He is even listening? Where are you looking for God?
God is awesome, pure, and refining. Moses found Him in a burning bush (Exodus 3). Later, he found God in a pillar of smoke by day and in a pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13). Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego found God in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3).
God is majestic and powerful. Job found Him in the thunder and the lightning (Job 37:2-5). David also found God in the thunder and lightning (Psalm 18).
God is miraculous and marvelous. The crowd who followed Jesus found Him in the miracles of Jesus. (John 4:48, Mark 16:20, John 2:11, John 6:2)
So what are you waiting for? A burning bush. A mighty storm. A miracle. Elijah found God in a gentle whisper.
“The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. [and then God spoke to Elijah].” - 1 Kings 20:13 (NIV)
Knowing how awesome, majestic, powerful, and marvelous God is, one might think He would have been in “the great and powerful wind”, or “in the earthquake”, or even “in the fire”, but God was in “a gentle whisper”. Sometimes God is in the quiet moments. In the details. In the small things. God says, “Be still and know that I am God.”
You don’t have to look hard. You don’t have to wait for some miraculous event or powerful storm. God is in the whispers. God is in the shadows. He is all around us, and He is always with us.
