Something About the Rain

Updated: May 25

Written by: Christine Martin

There is something calming and peaceful about the rain. I’m not talking about severe thunderstorms or hurricanes or tsunamis, just that gentle quiet, and sometimes pouring, rain. The steady trickling pitter patter sound outside the window can be so soothing. I love to fall asleep listening to it. It can inspire great writing or put you in the mood for a good book or a cup of tea.

It’s so much fun to go outside and just stand there in the rain. Spread your arms and look up. Let that water run down your face and soak your hair and clothing. Dance. Splash in the puddles. Enjoy the rain. Why not?

When I think about the rain, I picture this little girl in a yellow raincoat and hat with a red umbrella kneeling next to a puddle where a little yellow baby duck swims. Why that’s the picture that I see in my mind, I’m not quite sure. Perhaps it was a picture in a book my mother read to me when I was a little girl, or maybe I’ve stared at the salt container too long and imagined the rest.

There’s something cozy about the rain. Something eerie, refreshing, life-giving, rejuvenating—something about that fragrance. Something that makes you want to go outside and get wet, read, have a movie marathon, or write a story (that may start out with ‘a dark and stormy night’). There’s something about that steady rhythm of the rain that causes your eyelids to grow heavy.

There’s something about the rain.
