CAPTAIN AMERICA BEAR
Designed and crochet by Julie Dieck
This bear was made for Julie's aunt in memory of their son, Ruben, who died at birth a few years ago. His theme was Captain America and she asked Julie to make them a Cap themed teddy bear for their trip to Disney World in October and were going to make up a special shirt to go on it. Julie didn't think it would be a problem, as she has made quite a few small teddy bears in the past, but then found out that it was to be from 12" to 15" big. Julie then went through around five to seven other different teddy bear patterns in the next month and a half, trying to find one that she could do and looked cute. Plus, it took time to find yarn that was the right size and colors. She started crocheting at least four unfinished patterns only to rip them out because none of them were working. Two weeks before the deadline, Julie finally found a pattern that fit the qualifications perfect and rushed to get it done. But troubles didn't stop there. With only a quarter left, she ran out of blue yarn and the store where she got it hadn't restocked so she had to order some. Fortunately, her Aunt was able to give her an extra week to finish and also the yarn ended up coming early. But there was still a problem. Because of the size of the bear, Julie couldn't find safety eyes big enough so she also ended up ordering some - but turned out they were coming from China. With no way that they would arrive in time and only two days left, Julie rushed to the store and searched for an substitution. And found the perfect thing - buttons! Solid black shiny buttons turned out to be the perfect replacement. Well, even with all the setbacks and problems, Julie's aunt was delighted to tears when she saw the finished product. They made the special shirt for the bear with the front saying "I MAY BE IN HEAVEN BUT I STILL MADE IT TO DISNEY". On the back it has Ruben's name and the date that they visited Disney World - October 11, 2023. Julie's aunt's family took it to Florida and posed in front of the Disney castle with it. It may have been a lot of work - but it was totally worth the effort.
