This picture was drawn in 2018 by Julie Dieck from a TV show that she likes called "The Wild Wild West" featuring characters James West and Artemus Gordon. The drawing was entered into the Open Class Division at the Shiawassee County Fair where it won 1st Place.




THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER SCENE

In 2018, Julie drew this scene from a movie she likes called, "The Man from Snowy River". Her drawing was entered into the Youth Division at the Shiawassee County Fair where it won an A Group ribbon.




LAMBS PLAYING

In 2019 Julie entered this drawing in the Youth Division at the Shiawassee County Fair where it won an A Group ribbon, Superior, Best of Show, and the Gold State Fair ribbon. This was the first drawing Julie ever got a State fair ribbon on.




PAINT HORSE RUGGED PAINTED LARK

This picture was done in three days for a Breyer's drawing contest in 2020. This is a real paint quarter horse champion named Rugged Painted Lark. The drawing won first place in Julie's age group (17+) winning her a limited addition Rugged Painted Lark Breyer model autographed by the horse's owner. She was also awarded an autographed photo of Lark and his owner





MOTHER'S LOVE

In 2021 Julie entered this drawing into the Youth Division Class at the Shiawassee County Fair where she won an A Group ribbon, Superior, and Best of Show. This is drawn from an actual picture that Julie took of her sheep. The ewe pictured here is named Cookie.




KEANA

This beautiful portrait of my cousin Keana was drawn by Julie in 2022 and entered into the Youth Division at the Shiawassee County Fair. It won an A Group ribbon, Superior, Best of Show, and a gold State Fair ribbon (which means you can take it to the State Fair for free along with 9 other entries). It won 1st Place and Best of Show at State Fair in the Youth Division.





LITTLE CHEESE THIEF

Julie pulled an all-nighter in 2022 in order to finish this picture in time to enter it into the Youth Division at the Shiawassee County Fair the next day. It won an A group ribbon.




THE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHARD PUPPY

This picture was drawn in two days and was the last drawing Julie was able to enter into the Youth Division at the 2023 Shiawassee County Fair. It won an A Group ribbon, Superior, Best of Show, and a gold State Fair ribbon (which means you can take it to the State Fair for free along with 9 other entries). Julie did not end up taking this picture to State Fair.

Nice graphite shading techniques! You use a rubbing stick, I assume? What grades of pencils do you use -- all, it looks like, from hard to soft? Wonderful work!

Thanks! It was only in the last few years that I've started really using a blending stump (I think that's the same thing as a rubbing stick). I didn't even really use pencils for the skin shading on the picture of Keana, instead just using the blending stump with the tip rubbed in the pencil lead to fill it in. I also used the same technique for the puppy's white fur. I normally use grades starting at 2H (my favorite for starting the sketch) and up through H, HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B. Only if I really need to make a shadow contrast do I use an 8B. Almost everything I know in drawing was self taught. Christine put the…
